Hi all — here’s my take on the “social networking” edition of Sketchwar….
“‘Why Don’t You Read My Blog?’”
FADE IN:
INT. CAFÉ – DAY
PETER (30s) sits at a table in a sidewalk café and picks at a sandwich. A backpack sits at his feet.
Across from him sits his brother HARTWELL (40s).
HARTWELL
-- and the kids are good. Work is good. Mom’s doing better. She says “Hi.”
PETER
Cool.
HARTWELL
How was your month?
PETER
I dunno. Stuff happened. Pretty much like I wrote on the blog.
HARTWELL
I don’t read your blog.
PETER
I posted a big summary of how February went.
HARTWELL
I don’t read your blog.
PETER
I emailed you a copy of the blog entry.
HARTWELL
I don’t -- what did your blog say?
PETER
I got a wart lasered off. I cooked tiramisu for the first time. There were layoffs at work.
HARTWELL
You couldn’t just tell me that?
PETER
Well, the blog explains it better. It explains context and significance.
HARTWELL
What did your blog say?
PETER
I don’t want to bore myself repeating exactly what I’ve already written.
HARTWELL
What did it say?
PETER
I don’t remember. Oh, wait a sec.
Peter pulls a printout out of the backpack, puts it in front of Hartwell. Hartwell sets it aside.
HARTWELL
No, just summarize.
PETER
But it’s right there.
HARTWELL
Summarize.
PETER
Fine, I’ll read it to you.
Peter reaches for the printout.
They start fighting over it.
HARTWELL
I just want to know how your month was.
PETER
If you really cared, you’d already know!
They stop fighting over it.
HARTWELL
Now, that’s not fair.
PETER
Yeah, you’ve got a point.
HARTWELL
I need beer. Want anything?
Peter shrugs.
Hartwell goes into the café.
MADELINE (20s) happens by.
MADELINE
Hey, Peter!
PETER
Hi Madeline!
MADELINE
I read your blog today!
PETER
I read yours, too!
Long pause.
Neither of them can think of anything further to say.
MADELINE
Okay, see you later!
PETER
Yup.
Madeline exits.
Peter picks up the printout and reads it over.
FADE TO BLACK.
A couple logistical things for my fellow Sketchwar types:
1. Can I do some other day besides Wednesday? With TV class on Tuesday, the early part of the week is suddenly very bad for me viz writing deadlines.
2. Now that we have sketches going up all week, maybe we should start picking topics earlier? Lately I’ve been getting really screwed, not having any time on Monday/Tuesday *and* not getting the topic until Friday/Saturday.
