Here’s my commentary for the latest round of Sketchwar, which had the theme “SNL Characters, Past and Present.”

SNL Character Wrapup
I hope you all enjoyed following along this week as much as we enjoyed bringing these characters to life. In some ways, this was a really tough prompt, but I think everyone managed to bring their A game this week.
Nine sketches (thanks to a double bonus from Ken whose initial trepidation hid a torrent of creativity) and not a single Hans und Franz amongst them. Thank god.
- DNW led off with a bit of surreal time travel. Belushi and Radner commenting on the abomination that is MacGruber…
- Ken completely blew me away with his very funny “Samurai IT Guy”…
- Ken’s bonus #1 gives us Emily Litella on Bernie Madoff…
- Continuing his economics lessons, Ken followed up with Roseanne Roseannadanna on the economy…
- RA invited a very special guest onto Stuart Smalley’s show…
- Dave gave us five characters from two different decades in a speed dating bonanza (but I pity Kevin Nealon his super rapid costume change)…
- EL nailed Walken’s Continental (although I suspect he’d rather nail her)…
- Michael brought back Frankie and Willie! Times are tough all over, though. Ooh, I hate that…
- Finally, Peter brought back my FAVORITE inanimate object of all time, the Happy Fun Ball!
We hit most of the eras of SNL: the classic ’70s, the Billy Crystal years, the Phil Hartman years, and even today. I’m very impressed by the breadth brought to bear this week.
Oh, and here’s something new…an opportunity for everyone to vote on their favorite sketches this week. That’s courage, I tell ya. Our readership isn’t so high that these numbers are going to be so big, but still we’ll try it out. Let us know if you like or dislike the poll.

Next week, our brave combatants will tackle: March Madness. If you want a look ahead, be sure to check out our Schedule here on Sketch War.
And remember, if you think you’ve got the comedy chops to do battle with our scarred and bitter warriors, if you dare step into the hailstorm of seltzer and cream pies, if you think you’re MAN ENOUGH or WOMAN ENOUGH to make us laugh, write a sketch and contact us at submissions(nospam)@sketchwar.org.

Happy Fun Ba’al
Hi all — here’s my take on the “SNL characters, past and present” edition of Sketchwar….

The Night Watchmen
I always loved these guys. Just wondering what they’d be up to now.

INT. HIGH RISE BUILDING – NIGHT
Frankie and Willie, two very New York sounding night watchmen, patrol the hallways of an office building in Manhattan. They check doors as they walk and talk.

Continental Sensitivity
E.L. Raica comes at us with another sketch this week – impressive because apparently she’s been under the weather the past few days with some, uh, alimentary distress. So be sure to leave a nice comment, or a recipe for your grandmother’s remedy. Either one will do, I’m sure.
I think she’s really captured Walken here.

Live From New York, It’s Speed Dating
(A speed dating event. MEGAN, an attractive thirtysomething, sits at a small table across from PHIL, 38, in a sharp suit and tie.)

Time Travel Wrapup
Oy. I’m getting worse, not better! This time, four sketches have been posted before I got around to the wrapup for last week. I think I need to be a bit more proactive about these!
Seven sketches and one not-a-sketch from Dave rounded out last week’s battle.
- DNW got hit in the head with a line drive from the past…
- Ken dabbled in the market: past, present, and depressing future…
- Ken tossed in a bonus sketch about the lengths some men will go to get laid…
- RA got trapped in time with no way home…
- EL painted a surreal and frightening scene of lost souls and lost socks…
- Dave dropped a short story on us all, but we let it slide ’cause it was a rollicking tale of cause, effect, consequences, and something nasty in a jar of water…
- Michael demonstrated the risks of lab assistants…
- Peter showed us what time travel will really be used for.
Next week our brave sketch warriors will be back writing sketches for SNL Characters. (Of course when I say “next week”, I mean right now. Check them out. There’s some good opening salvos.)

Daily Affirmation with Stuart Smalley
This one came to me almost immediately. I’m just thrilled no one beat me to the punch on this pairing. I would pay good money to see this sketch.

Emily Litella on Bernie Maddoff (bonus sketch)
Another favorite character I just had to say “hi” to….
